Why do we watch? It's human nature

Hey, I've got this neighbor. I'm not sure what his name is. I don't know if he's married or has kids. I really have no idea what he does for a living or where he works. But I hear he's throwing himself a birthday party this weekend and I was wondering if you'd like to come.

I'm pretty sure I know your answer. And I agree with you.

What would be the point of watching a stranger celebrate his birthday? There is no emotional investment in seeing his reaction as he opens his presents. Who cares? It would be like going to a wedding of two strangers, or attending a retirement party for someone you've never met.

And, yet, we go out of our way each year to watch the Oscars, the Emmys and the Grammys.

The people who are being honored at these events are complete strangers to you, whether you choose to accept that or not.

Search is on for Fidentia millions

J Arthur Brown, the man behind what could be the country's biggest yet corporate investment scandals, went from the garage of a rented house in Cape Town to a lifestyle complete with country estates, flashy cars and failed spas - much of it funded by allegedly pilfered trust funds. Now, following a Financial Services Board investigation, Brown's financial services and technology pyramid is in tatters; its business affairs are under scrutiny by two law-enforcement agencies; and forensic auditors have been appointed by investors and businesses that were sucked into his grandiose operations and, in some cases, bled dry. A South African Revenue Services investigation is also likely. .

Clinton proposal smacks of socialism

The year 2007 has barely begun and we are already seeing tons of media coverage about next year's presidential race. But certain segments of the press are treating some figures, such as Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton, with kid gloves.

After reading some of the stuff written about Obama, you would think that the staffs of newsrooms across the country were readying themselves for the second coming of Christ. Likewise for Mrs. Clinton, who enjoys such favorable news coverage that Saturday Night Live recently did a biting parody of MSNBC's Chris Matthews practically worshipping the ground she walked upon.

But those following the candidates should keep an eye out for statements that aren't widely reported by the mainstream media organs. One such example involves statements made by Clinton during last week's winter meeting of the Democratic National Committee.
