Swapping fire coverage may save lives

Bennie Gatto believes elected leaders in Manteca and Lathrop have an obligation to maximize tax dollars spent for fire protection.

That's why the former Lathrop mayor and current Lathrop Manteca Fire District board member wants to get the ball rolling for joint discussions between the two cities and fire districts.

"You don't know how you can improve things until you talk," Gatto said.

Manteca Fire Chief George Quaresma concurs, noting it is wise for the three jurisdictions responsible for fire protection and emergency medical response in Manteca and Lathrop to sit down every two to the years or so and examine how things are done.

"The goal is to do what's best for people," Quaresma said.

Quaresma said what could come out of such meetings wouldn't even have to fall into the category of merging the districts.
