Hylton Gets Backing For 500 Quest From Retirement Living

Daytona Beach, FL (AHN) - Former NASCAR star 72-year-old James Hylton is attempting to make the Daytona 500 and now he's got the backing to go with it.

Retirement Living TV is the primary sponsor of his No. 58 Chevrolet, built and prepared by Richard Childress Racing. Retirement Living TV's message is to inform, involve and inspire fans and improve America's image, attitudes and perception of aging.

It would seem that there would be no better spokesperson than Hylton, who hopes to go down in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest driver to qualify for the Daytona 500.

"This is a perfect sponsorship," said Hylton. "Retirement Living TV believes, like myself, that age should never be a factor in allowing you to reach the highest of accomplishments.

"He also has extensive dealings with institutional partners in real estate, a field we plan to enter this year," he added.

Increase nursing home needs allowance

Amid the current and tumultuous debate concerning taxes and needs and services in New Jersey, those who live in the state's nursing homes and long-term health care facilities are all too often absent from discussion. Yet they should not be. Though mostly their care is paid for out of Social Security benefits and Medicaid services, each nursing home resident is also extended a so-called "personal needs allowance" (PNA) from the state. In New Jersey, that allowance remains a paltry sum.

Proposed Senior Living Community for Macedon

Kyle Clark (Macedon, N.Y.) -- Retiring baby-boomers are big business for real estate developers. Now, MorningStar Communities wants to build a 300-home development aimed at middle-income seniors.

While there's a desperate need for middle-income senior housing, some are skeptical whether this project is truly affordable.

In the eyes of the downstate developer, a 130-acre field in Macedon could be the home of a community for retiring baby boomers looking to downsize and a potential new turn in the maze of housing options for older adults.

Mary Rose McBride, of Lifespan, helps retirees make the transition. She said there are low-income housing and luxury developments, but an “astronomical need for places in the middle."

MorningStar bills itself as just such a community and is asking the Macedon town board to approve a senior housing development aimed at still-active baby boomer retirees interested in one-floor, easy maintenance homes right next to tennis courts, swimming pool, and walking trails.

A report published November 21, 2006 by the Lewin Group indicates that the percentage of very senior adults (aged 85 or older) in nursing homes has sharply declined over the past two decades. The report, titled "Nursing Home Use by 'Oldest Old' Sharply Declines," traces trends in nursing home admissions since 1985. The percentage of adults over 65 years of age in nursing homes decreased 0.6% since 1985, but the rate among those aged 85 or older dropped 7.2%.... .
