County resists state on Mount View

LOCKPORT - Niagara County Manager Gregory D. Lewis released a letter late Thursday that he received from Albany, setting deadlines for the county to close Mount View Health Facility, the county-owned nursing home, and plan for an assisted-living facility to replace it.

The county's response in regard to building a new facility: You can't make us.

"Niagara County will make its own independent analysis and exercise its own independent judgment about what is best for the Niagara County community and the future of Mount View," Lewis said in a statement he released with the letter.

Legislature Chairman Clyde L. Burmaster, R-Ransomville, chimed in, "I have not heard one legislator in the majority caucus say they were interested in building an assisted-living facility. It's pretty clear we have to get out of the business."

Burmaster's statement echoed one made by former Chairman William L.

Getting To Know More About A Disease Amongst Us

YAKIMA, Wash. - An effort is being made to educate the community about a disease that affects millions of people in our country.

The Highgate Senior Living center hosted an Alzheimer's Disease speaker on Thursday night in Yakima.

There's so many people living with the disease in our community, it's something we can't ignore.

That's the subject of Sheryl Sparks' presentation who was the featured speaker. Over 30 people were in attendance.

They either wanted to know more about the disease because they have a loved one affected by the disease, or they just wanted to be prepared in case they encounter any symptoms.

Alzheimer's Disease is most common when a person reaches their sixties, but it could show up earlier.

Lyon on trial

New St Kilda coach Ross Lyon admits it won't just be his players who will be on trial in the upcoming NAB Cup as the AFL's only coaching newcomer in 2007 prepares to go under the spotlight for the first time.

After more than a decade as an assistant coach at Carlton, Richmond and Sydney, following a distinguished playing career with Fitzroy, Lyon is as prepared as any new coach for life in the big time.

But he is also realistic enough to realise that it's a whole new ball game for a coach when you are the one calling the shots as opposed to being an assistant coach offering advice to the senior coach.

While Lyon is confident in his ability to quickly adjust to life as a senior coach, he plans to use the pre-season competition to iron out any problems he may have in taking charge at senior level for the first time.

Conley brings 20 years experience to Indian River hospice

VERO LAKE ESTATES — Marilyn Conley, who joined the Visiting Nurse Association as director of professional services for its hospice division two months ago, is settling in to her new position. Conley, a registered nurse, has the proper attitude, a well-buttressed aptitude and an easy-to-take chuckle.

Still, showing her mettle involved enduring a litany of telephone and face-to-face talks, a veritable gauntlet. "It was a very intense process of multiple interviews," spread over a couple of months, says Conley.

New wage boost puts squeeze on teenage workers across Arizona

Oh, for the days when Arizona's high school students could roll pizza dough, sweep up sticky floors in theaters or scoop ice cream without worrying about ballot initiatives affecting their earning power.

That's certainly not the case under the state's new minimum-wage law that went into effect last month.

Some Valley employers, especially those in the food industry, say payroll budgets have risen so much that they're cutting hours, instituting hiring freezes and laying off employees. .
