JACKEL: Persistence leads to special memory

As my index finger tapped nervously on the "2" button of my telephone key pad that summer day in 2003, I contemplated just who would answer once I had the nerve to place my call.I had recently read a brief item in Sports Illustrated that Kenosha native Ray Berres, pitching coach of the 1959 American League pennant-winning "Go Go" Chicago White Sox and a man who once squatted behind the plate as Babe Ruth menacingly cocked his bat, was alive and well in Twin Lakes - just 40 miles or so southwest of Racine. Furthermore, it was my understanding that the widowed Berres was quite lucid at the age of 96, even though word had it that he was somewhat reclusive and discouraged interview requests. How could I pass up this opportunity? Here was one of the last links in the world to a cherished era of sports and this somewhat mysterious figure was practically living a couple of Barry Bonds home run shots away from my door.Exhaling, I placed the call and summoned my courage."Hello?" a man answered in an obviously elderly, yet clear voice."Hi, Mr.

Study's reaction is mixed Care providers worry over state's budget ...

MILLERSBURG -- A just-released study that found the state could save millions of dollars by paying more money to home health providers and less to nursing homes is drawing predictably mixed reactions.

"A nursing facility is going to say, 'Hey, we need this money, and home health cannot take care of these people like we can.' And there are cases where that is true. But if you walk into any nursing home, you will see people who just basically need assistance with medications, but maybe for whatever reason the family is not able to do that," said Leslee Mast, superintendent at the Holmes County Home.

Mast brings a unique perspective to the study by the Ohio Council for Home Care, a home health advocacy group. She's in the business of long-term care. But because the Holmes County Home is not state certified, her facility does not receive state funding.

Miss Georgia Preteen to deliver Valentine's cards to the elderly ...

Loganville, Georgia, (January 29, 2007) - Loganville Middle School student Kayla Watson will likely be getting plenty of hugs this Valentine's Day. The 6th grader, who is Miss Georgia Preteen 2006-2007, will be handing out Valentines cards to the residents of Southern Plantation, an assisted living facility in Loganville.

I want to make their Valentines Day happy, said Watson, who plans to hand-make cards for each of the 80 residents at the facility. And I want to make them feel special.

Since being crowned Miss Georgia Preteen, Watson has volunteered her time to numerous events and charities, and has been recognized by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and Loganville Mayor Tim Barron. She is a three-year member of Queens for a Cure, a group of pageant queens that rally together to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
