| PANPHA: Gov. Rendell's Budget Disappointing; Another Year Slips By as Senior Services System Faces Breakdown
PANPHA, a state association of more than 350 nonprofit senior living and service providers, had this reaction to Gov. Rendell's budget proposal. It may be attributed to Ron Barth, PANPHA's president and CEO: "As Yogi Berra once said, 'it's deja-vu all over again.' Once again the Governor has touted his strong commitment to home- and community-based services, and once again we commend him for those efforts to invest more funds in programs to help people stay in their homes and communities for as long as possible. "But another year has come and gone without facing the hard structural changes needed in Pennsylvania's so-called 'system' of senior care and services. What we have is not a system, but a hodgepodge of different health care, housing and service programs, run by different state agencies and funded by different revenue sources, cobbled together incrementally, year upon year, straining to do things they were never designed to do, on a scale that was never envisioned.
Animal group forms alliance with Hospice
Pet owners know an animal's unconditional love can provide comfort in times of stress. And, for someone who is dying, that special human-animal bond can be even more important in providing a better quality of life in those final days. "I know how powerful animals are," said David Stegman, executive director of Valley Humane Society. He also knows that sometimes pets are considered a nuisance or an extra burden many families may not want to deal with while a loved one is dying. Through an agreement recently signed with Hope Hospice, however, Valley Humane has committed its resources to helping animals stay with their owners as long as possible. "During a time of stress, a cat or dog is just as important as a member of the family," Stegman said. Valley Humane has agreed to help Hope Hospice further its goal of providing end-of-life care and grief support to patients and families in three ways.

But after she met and married Roger Benton, an agronomist consultant for the United States Department of Agriculture, that is where she ended up living. She said she really loves the country and can recommend many amazing places to visit. .
