| MARSHALL LOEB'S DAILY MONEY TIP: If You Care For Aging Parents, You May Be In Line For A Tax Break
NEW YORK (Dow Jones) -- If you care for an aging parent, you're not alone. The National Alliance for Caregiving and the AARP estimate that 21% of all American adults care for other adults. Seven million Americans take care of someone 55 or older and live at least an hour away, a Pew Center study reports. And that number is growing -- it is expected to double within 15 years. There is some tax relief for adult children who support their aging parents. You can reduce your 2006 taxable income by $3,300 if you claim a parent as your dependent. So how do you know if you can get the exemption? There are three tests to determine if your parent is eligible to be your dependent. The first one is obvious-- what's his or her relationship to you? To qualify, he or she must be a parent or stepparent.
The Red Cross Steps in to Help the Debuty Family
Blount County (WVLT) - Already, the Blount County community is responding to this destructive fire with an outpouring of love and support. Volunteer TV's Gary Loe reports help is coming from many sources -- from those you would expect, like the Red Cross -- and others, from people who've never met the Debuty family. Strangers who've felt a connection to the family who suffered the losses of 4 children, their home, and most of their possessions are making certain their physical needs are met. "We wanted to touch them, touch the community ourselves, and just let them know we're thinking about them, praying about them," donator Travis Weeks said. Dozens bring emergency items for the Debuty family here to the Blount County chapter of the American Red Cross.
Lethem businesswoman robbed by armed Brazilian gunmen
A Lethem businesswoman was on Friday evening robbed of money and over $300,000 in jewellery by three armed men who are believed to be Brazilians and a photograph left behind by one of the men has been positively identified by Brazilian police as that of a known criminal who is wanted for a series of murders and armed robberies in that country. A source told Stabroek News that up to yesterday none of the men had been captured although Brazilian police were cooperating fully with investigations. The businesswoman, Bibi Zulika Samaroo, told Stabroek News that she was confronted by the men, two of whom were armed with sawn-off shotguns and the third with a handgun, at about 8.30pm on Friday night as she was about to close her Lot 173 Lethem supermarket. One of her friends, Vedakanand Dalip, was in the supermarket at the time chatting with her.

Inn holds fashion show
ACTON — Once a year, the lobby at the Inn at Robbins Brook becomes a runway where residents can strut their stuff in affordable clothes from local retailers. Linda Kiernan, the inn’s director of activities, and Maura Ferrigno, the executive director, gear up for two hours of fashion and shopping for the 89 residents of the assisted living facility at 10 Devon Drive in North Acton. The inn hosts seniors with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments and those in need of lifestyle support. Seven residents sported clothes from Talbot’s, Liz Claiborne, Chico’s and other brands available in Acton at an event that allows these seniors to participate as well as shop. This year’s show was supplied by Trading Clothes Consignment, a Chelmsford-based store run by former nurse’s assistant Sharon Arden.
