Group pushing in-home care says nursing homes cost Ohio too much

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio's Medicaid costs for senior citizens' long-term care are among the most expensive in the country, and the state's reliance on costly nursing homes can't be sustained as the number of older people swells, according to a study released Monday by a group that advocates in-home care.

Ohio ranks 49th in providing seniors with less-expensive, in-home care services, said the study commissioned by the Ohio Council for Home Care, a trade group that represents personal care aides and hospice workers. Only Mississippi's Medicaid program spends less on home care.

The $25,000 study was conducted independently by a Columbus-based research firm that examined state budget data, along with information provided by the AARP, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Kaiser Family Foundation, a Washington-based nonprofit health group.

No room for seniors

Ruth Grounds, 85, is No. 42 on the list for a spot at Fairbanks Pioneers' Home after waiting two years.

That experience has prompted her son, Barney McClure to take a proactive step in anticipation of his own golden years, even though he's only 65.

"I'm in the process of signing up for the Pioneer Home right now," he said last week, visiting with his mother at Caring Bridges Assisted Living, where Grounds has stayed for more than a year.

Grounds' journey through her later years is similar to that of many older Americans. She lived in California for most of her life and McClure would travel from Fairbanks to visit her at least once a month as she aged and suffered from dementia. In May 2004, McClure moved Grounds into the home he shares with his wife in Fairbanks.

Your Money’s Worth By Steven J. Bailey, CLU, ChFC

Once you have decided that it is time for you to start investing for your future you must decide what you are going to invest in and how you are going to do it.

This can become a very difficult task because there are so many different types of investments out there and they are constantly changing. You will also have to decide what specific investments are right for you and in which order you want to fund the different type of accounts (i.e. IRA, Roth IRA, Non- Qualified accounts).

It is very common for a portfolio to include a mix of different investments. These investments could include a mix of money market accounts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, and other investment vehicles. Your portfolio should contain investments with varying levels of risks to help minimize exposure in case one of the portfolio holdings decline significantly.

Bright Side Manor Volunteers, an enrichment

Elizabeth Davis, Executive Director and Marge Mazzo, Social Director welcomed some of their volunteers at a party held in their honor. Located in Teaneck on Teaneck Road, Bright Side has been fortunate in getting these people to volunteer.

This party was a tribute to them and one could see the wonderful spirit that emanated from their efforts. One could also see the pride that Bright Side had in being able to honor these volunteers.

Starting out in 1990, Davis took over a then very small and somewhat dingy nursing home. While her intentions were good, there was little to work with, As a matter of fact, she had to continue working in a hospital just to maintain her family while attending Bright Side on her days off. The facility was struggling and budgets were deficit loaded.
