Ventas adds assisted-living sites

Louisville-based Ventas Inc. is buying 74 assisted-living communities in the United States and Canada from Sunrise Senior Living Real Estate Investment Trust in Toronto for $1.8 billion, including debt.

The deal is in line with Ventas' strategy of diversifying its holdings of health-care real estate -- and not just by moving into Canada.

Legislation could provide relief on student loan interest rate

Congressional leaders are moving briskly ahead on bills that would dramatically cut interest rates on student loans for some borrowers.

Although the measures have yet to become law, one has been approved in the House and a similar proposal has passed a key Senate committee. Experts say this is a sign that lending reforms are likely to be included in higher-education legislation that is expected this year.

Helping hearts smile

CHAPEL HILL -- Nelda Davies answered her door to find four grinning Duke students holding a red rose and homemade Valentine's Day cards. "Happy Valentine's, dear sweetheart," the visitors sang to the tune of "Happy Birthday." Davies beamed. "It's sweet that you're doing this," she told the students. Davies, though, is a UNC fan. She invited the guests into her house, in part to keep an eye on the UNC-Wake Forest game on television. The students were some of the hundreds of volunteers who assisted with A Helping Hand's sixth-annual "Valentine Delivery and Serenade" on Saturday. The nonprofit, based in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, helps seniors and disabled people year-round with transportation, food, errands and other services. For Valentine's Day, volunteers from 74 community organizations made and distributed cards to about 2,300 Helping Hand clients and seniors.
