The average cost for a private nursing home in Virginia is $187 a day.

An assisted-living facility averages $119 a day.

And a private home-health aide costs about $17 an hour in Virginia.

Adults flush with money at the height of their careers would have a hard time paying these bills.

Senior citizens on fixed incomes find it even more difficult.

As a wave of baby boomers approaches the age of needing long-term care, the cost of services is a growing national topic of conversation.


County agrees to reduce beds at nursing home

JANESVILLE - Within the next few months, Rock Haven Nursing Home will reduce the number of licensed beds from 156 to 130, but no jobs or current residents will be affected, officials said.

Despite a couple motions to table the decision, the Rock County Board of Supervisors approved the reduction Thursday 17-10. Two supervisors were absent.“By March we will be at our new size and have staff moved where we need them most," Rock Haven Administrator Sherry Gunderson said.Rock Haven, located north of Janesville at the corner of Highway 14 and 51, treats people with medically complex needs, such as those requiring IVs, feeding tubes or people with memory loss. The facility also cares for short-term patients, including people receiving rehabilitation from strokes or hip or knee replacements.


Notes: Kenseth, Kahne qual times disallowed

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Qualifying times for Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne were disallowed following Sunday's Bud Pole Qualifying at Daytona International Speedway after the two cars were found to have "unapproved aerodynamic devices."

NASCAR vice president of corporate communications Jim Hunter said the No. 17 Ford and No. 9 Dodge would be placed at the back of Thursday's second Gatorade Duel. In addition, Hunter said NASCAR will consider the possibility of future fines, suspensions and penalties against the two teams for the rulebook violation.

Pennsylvania Nursing Home Aide Faces Sex Assault Charges

A certified nurse's assistant was arrested in Kingston, Penn., when he was found partially nude near a 90-year-old Alzheimer's patient, authorities said.

David Michael Gula, was released on bail the day after the incident at Kingston Commons Nursing Home.

Gula, 27, was charged with criminal attempt to commit rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, institutional sexual assault and indecent assault.

He was arrested early Sunday after a nursing supervisor called police around 12:45 a.m. "to report that an employee was involved in sexual misconduct with" the elderly woman, the Scranton Times-Tribune reported.

The woman's only local relative expressed disgust with the lurid accusations.
