Small mother, daughter team hit big intergenerational stage

Marilyn Small and her daughter Alison Baiocco have 'No time to get down,' cause they're moving up - to the main stage that is.

Dressed in black, sporting white fedoras, ties and spats, the dancing duo from Stoney Creek will step to the sounds of K-Os' 'Crabbuckit' tomorrow night at the Dofasco Centre for the Arts in Hamilton, as the Burlington Footnotes Senior Performing Troupe Inc. celebrates the sixth anniversary of Making Spirits Bright with an intergenerational cast of professional and amateur community talent.

"This variety show will delight audiences of all ages," says artistic director Rosemarie Maurice.

Senior company members from Student Theatre, dancers from The Turning Pointe studio, along with special guest jazz vocalist Sarah Jerrom and her quartet, What's On? Tap! Youth Company and Cathy Duncan, assistant choreographer for the Canadian Tap Dance Team and her Downbeats Tap Crew are just a few of the talented performers making an appearance, joining the Burlington Footnotes, on the main stage.

Philippines Determined To Create More High Paying Jobs So ...

Manila, Philippines (AHN) - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Saturday said her administration is determined to create more high-paying jobs locally so that "Filipino no longer need to go abroad for a job."

Arroyo made the statement during the 2007 International Quest for Miss Laoag City Pamulinawen at the Centennial Arena in Laoag City, Philippines. She said she wants "overseas work to be a career of choice and not the only option" for all Filipinos.

Addressing the crowd, the president said, "And what do I want to do? I want to create high-paying jobs here at home, here in the north, here in Ilocos Norte, here in Laoag. So that Filipinos no longer need to go abroad for a job. I want overseas work to be a career choice and not the only option for a talented man or a woman in search of a better life."

It was not the first time that Arroyo announced her ambitious dream for the talented Filipinos.

Facts about filing 2006 income tax returns

April 17. The usual deadline, April 15, is on a Sunday, and the next day, April 16, is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, a legal holiday under a new city law. Although it's not a federal holiday ---- and the IRS will be open that day ---- the agency has extended the tax filing deadline to April 17 because of a federal statute that says District of Columbia holidays have a nationwide impact. This change came too late to be reflected in IRS forms and publications for the 2006 tax year, which had already been printed.

Stenson claims victory at the Dubai Classic

Henrik Stenson again demonstrated his affection for the European Tour's 'Gulf Swing' by winning the Dubai Desert Classic by one stroke.

The Dubai-based Swede, who has finished in the top eight in the last six tournaments in the Middle East, overcame gusts of up to 30 kph to shoot a closing 68 for a 19-under-par tally of 269 at the Emirates Golf Club.

Overnight leader Ernie Els (71) struggled to recover from a three-bogey outward half of 37. The three-times champion eventually finished second, despite holing out from a greenside bunker for a birdie at the 14th.

Bill to protect nursing home residents introduced

A bill to make the reporting of abuse of elderly nursing home residents compulsory has been introduced into federal parliament.

The new arrangements will come into effect on April 1.

MInister for Ageing Senator Santo Santoro says the legislation is a major step forward for aged care.

"The standards of care in our aged care sector today are generally very high, but the legislation will make them even higher," he said.

"Residents and their families can rest assured that any concerns they have about standards of care will be investigated fairly and promptly." The new compulsory reporting arrangements mean residential aged care providers must report any suspected sexual abuse or physical assault of residents. The report must be made to both the police and to the Department of Health and Ageing.
