Dog 'knew' who we were talking about

After reading the responses to Lauren Ritchie's column about the death of her dog Hank, I wanted to share a story of another of the "Dogs that drift in and out of the world of humans."

My sister gave her husband a 2-year-old cocker spaniel for Christmas some years ago, thinking that it would keep him company, as he had already retired and was home alone much of the time. They became the best of buddies. As it turned out, my brother-in-law, Jim, was diagnosed with the early onset of Alzheimer's.

Health warning for those who attended Jan. 29 funeral at Watson Funeral Home

The Rhode Island Department of Health is warning those who attended a January funeral that they may have come into contact with a person carrying a case of Neisseria Meningococcermia. Left untreated, the disease can develop into bacterial meningitis.

According to a statement released by the state health department on Feb. 5, an individual who lives in an assisted living residence in Rhode Island attended the funeral of Mary Nelson at the Watson Funeral Home in East Providence on Jan. 29.

The infected individual, who was not identified, apparently hugged and kissed those attending the service at the funeral home. The health department stressed in its statement that the infected individual has not contracted bacterial meningitis. But state health officials urged anyone who attended the service as well as employees of the funeral home to be treated with antibiotics as a precaution.

Health Minister disregards retirement age

Fijis interim Health Minister Dr Jona Senilagakali says he will disregard the mandatory retirement policy due to the shortage of staff in the health care system.

"The government says that doctors should retire at 55," he said.

"If they retire at 10 oclock and I will hire them again at 11 the same morning for them to continue to work on a contract and it will be the same for nurses."

Dr Senilagakali said the Health Ministry cannot afford to lose specialised health professional like doctors and nurses.

Fijis largest hospital, the Colonial War Memorial Hospital is facing a shortage of aestheticians and only emergency operations are being allowed.

Interim Public Service Minister Poseci Bune has proposed reducing the retirement age for civil servants from 60 to 55-years.
