Uzi on the brink of living his dream

CHIPPENHAM all-rounder Uzi Qureshi is dreaming of a future in first class cricket after he was named the first ever associate member of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club's Academy.

Qureshi had also been invited to join Hampshire and train with Somerset, but the 13-year-old opted for Gloucestershire, where he will benefit from year round coaching and will act as 12th man for the senior sides.

"I've wanted to be a first class cricketer since I could walk and this is a great opportunity to fulfil that dream," he said.

"I want to go on and play for Gloucestershire and England."

Qureshi, who made his first century aged 10, came to the attention of the selectors after his club Chippenham set up a coaching link with the county last summer.

Laying Waste to Everything

And if anyone, like the Venezuelan Synod, still had any doubts as to what his “socialism" means, he recommended reading Karl Marx and Lenin.

Chávez defined the four engines that he will be driving forward: a) Socialist Constitutional Reform; b) education of the people to “rout the old values of capitalism and individualism"; c) the new geometry of power over the people's map to achieve a “symmetrical relationship throughout the nation's territory (goodbye to decentralization and the autonomy of regional and municipal governments); and d) “the revolutionary explosion of community power" (read another way of getting each and every citizen to toe the autocrat's line).

And lastly, he confirmed the closure of RCTV and any other communication medium that opposes him.

Kensington sees flood of candidates for 2 city council seats

KENSINGTON — Only two seats are vacant on the Kensington City Council, but three times as many residents have put a bid in for the seat.

The six candidates, including both incumbents, will face the Feb. 27 primary election; only four will make it to the April 3 general election.

Incumbent Bob Westbrook hasn’t heard any hot issues that would provoke so many people to run for city council in this Smith County town.

"Basically, I didn’t think I wasn’t doing anything wrong because the last time Ken (Ellenberger) and I both ran, we had no opposition whatsoever," he said. "What I try to do for the city is in the best interest of the city."

Westbrook, assistant manager at Country Corner, has had the position eight years, but will gladly welcome a new councilman if he’s defeated.

Upland, the city of gracious living, decade by decade

Resuming, after a long break, this column's quiet celebration of Upland's centennial, let's focus on a handy timeline of Upland history, which appeared last year in the city newsletter in four serialized installments.

(None had cliffhangers.)

Assembled by City Hall senior planner John Atwater, the timeline took note of building projects, population statistics and memorable moments, year by year.

Allow me to present a capsule version, presenting some of the timeline's more noteworthy facts but with updates and commentary by yours truly.

1885: Telegraph office erected at 379 N. Third Ave.

1890: Boston Bakery opens at 120 E. Ninth St. Today it's The Local Baker and Cafe.

1906: Incorporation! Population: 1,200.

1907: San Antonio Hospital opens on West Arrow Highway.
