Hospital: Norovirus outbreak is over

SAN LEANDRO — The norovirus outbreak that hit more than 20 people at the Bancroft Convalescent Hospital on Jan. 20 has ended, the facility said Monday.

The convalescent hospital was taken off quarantine Saturday, allowing staff and patients to return to normal operations.

"I just feel glad it's over," said owner Boyd MacDonald, adding that the hospital will now be taking greater precautions to prevent another outbreak from spreading in the future. "We just have to be ready for the next time."

For the convalescent hospital, it was a lesson learned: Be ready for next year, when the norovirus is expected to hit again. The spread of the contagious flu-like disease among nursing facilities, hospitals and large group settings has put county and state health departments on high alert, with officials saying the outbreaks havebeen part of an unusual trend this season.

South Africa: Most Children Living On the Edge

More than half of South Africa's children are in households that struggle to survive each month, in the continent's wealthiest country, according to the findings of a new report.

They are part of families earning less than a US$1 a day, derived mainly from social grants provided by the state, according to the findings of the 'South African Child Gauge 2006', produced by the Children's Institute (CI) at the University of Cape Town.

Peninsula's first Jewish senior center in pipeline

The first Jewish-sponsored senior living center on the Peninsula began lining up future residents in Palo Alto earlier this year. Though construction of the "899 Charleston" center, actually located at 901 San Antonio Road, will not begin until this summer, the center began taking reservations for its 193 apartments Jan 2. The 8.6-acre Taube-Koret Campus for Jewish Life, which will include both 899 Charleston and a new Oshman Family Jewish Community Center, will cost $635 million and likely take two years to build, spokeswoman Stephanie Rees said. The collaborative project is being funded and developed by the Jewish Home of San Francisco, Palo Alto's Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, local counties and by individual donations. "To build a Jewish community center on the same campus (as the senior center) is unique to the industry.
