Still rooting at 103

That's Marion Wood's Super Bowl prediction, and you don't argue with a 103-year-old woman who saw Red Grange's six-touchdown day in person, holds a pretty strong claim on the distinction of oldest Bears fan and makes an awful lot of sense when she talks about Rex Grossman.

State Gets $21 Million Over Five Years for Senior Alternatives

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana has received a $21M federal grant over five years to pay for home health care, assisted living and other services needed by senior citizens moving out of nursing homes.

Family and Social Services Administration Secretary Mitch Roob says the state received the funds to mark the success of a Division of Aging program called Options. The Options program was created to offer seniors alternatives to traditional nursing homes.

Roob says many seniors enjoy the independence of community-based care. He says the availability of alternatives such as home health care, assisted living, adult foster care, and adult day services allows seniors to maintain some independence in their living arrangements while having access to services they may need.

2 Nurses Accused Of Withholding Medication At Nursing Home

Two nurses who worked a Suwannee County nursing facility were arrested Wednesday, accused of several counts of neglect after an investigation found they withheld medication from elderly patients, according to the Florida Attorney General.

Ashley Dawn Fralick, 27, and Melissa Elaine Bowen, 30, were both employed at the Good Samaritan Center Nursing Facility located in Dowling Park.

"Knowing that elderly patients were denied essential medications is heartbreaking," Attorney General Bill McCollum said in a statement. "These victims rightly deserved and expected care and attention, but instead received neglect and abuse." .

Old soldiers far from fading away

With President Bush's plan to send more troops into Iraq, the welfare of our soldiers weighs heavily on the American conscience. Along with our concern and support for enlisted men and women, it seems a fitting time to also recognize those who have fought for our country in the past.

The Korean War Veterans Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter 109 is trying to do just that.

Founded in 1985, KWVA is the oldest and largest association of Korean Veterans in the U.S. The local chapter, 109, includes more than 45 veterans who either served in the U.S. military during the Korean war or have served in Korean territory since.
